Work Permit is a written authorization to work in Canada issued by the Canadian High Commission to a person who is not a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident of Canada.

It is normally valid for specific period of time and for a specific job. The work permit is issued based on a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) issued by Department of Employment and Social Development confirming the particular job is in high demand in Canada.

Initially the Employer applies for a LMIA after which the Employer extends a Temporary Job Offer to the applicant. The Foreign Skilled Worker then can apply for a Work Permit at his local CIC office which is issued provided the screening process meets CIC requirements.

Basic Requirements to obtain a work permit for Canada

  • The Immigration Office must be satisfied that the applicant would leave Canada upon completion of his employment in Canada.
  • A submission of Police Clearance Certification if necessary
  • A submission of Medical Examination report
  • Submission of additional documents as required by the CIC

Foreign Workers and graduating postgraduate students in certain provinces can apply for PR under the Canadian Experience Class.
